I hope you’re having a fantastic start to 2017! I am truly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had in 2016…here’s a short recap!
Early in the year, I started a trio with friends Janna Leduc and Jay Riehl. We call ourselves Thorn & Roses. We have enjoyed creating our unique sound over the past year, and even toured Europe in May. The band features three part harmony, fiddle, acoustic guitar and Jay playing bass and drums at the same time! We have many shows booked for 2017, so please check out our website, www.thornandroses.net, and stay connected with us on Facebook and Twitter!
South Mountain was busy in 2016 as well! We recorded a new CD in April, Kickin’ & Swingin’, which featured twin fiddles with the incomparable Don Reed. It was amazing being in the studio with my idols Steve Piticco and Don Reed. We accompanied the album with a 4 week European tour, and a performance at the iconic Havelock Country Jamboree. Playing Havelock had been a “bucket list” item of mine, and I was excited to have been able to check it off with South Mountain. Stay in touch with the band at www.southmountain.ca and on Facebook.
I am grateful to have started working with Canadian Country gem, Kelly Prescott, who has recently released her new EP, Hillbilly Jewels. Kelly’s music is exactly what’s been missing from country radio. This year, we performed at the Cavendish Beach Music Festival, PEI, The Ottawa Bluesfest, Canadian National Exhibition, Toronto, and opened for Randy Bachman at the TD Centre, Ottawa. I am fortunate to have many more exciting opportunities in the works with Kelly in 2017. I will post these soon!
Along with Kelly, I shared the stage with some truly talented artists, who I am lucky to call friends. Kaitlin Kozell, Brooklyn Roebuck, Vanessa Marie Carter, Lisa Marie, Shae Dupuy, Tianna Woods, Lou Moore, Jeff Tanner, Fred Hale, Christian James Band, the cast of the CKNX Barndance Show and the cast of Christmas in Nashville, you have all filled my heart with so much joy. I am thankful to work with such talent and class.
In September, I had the honour of playing in the house band for the Canadian Country Music Awards. This experience was both inspiring and nerve wracking! It was exhilarating working alongside some of the indusry’s best musicians, and sharing the stage with Canadian Icons, like Carolyn Dawn Johnson and The Family Brown.
In November, I had the opportunity to tour with Juno and CCMA winner, Charlie Major. Charlie’s songwriting, musicianship and stage presence was inspiring; it was a wonderful experience sharing the stage with him each night!
Of course, I can not leave out my family, The Beckett’s. We had many great shows this year, but my personal favourite is our annual New Year’s Eve Show at the Roxy Theatre. We were fortunate to have another year of sold out shows, and we thoroughly enjoyed having Lisa Marie and Devan Ballagh as our special guests. Please check our website to see what shows we have coming up in 2017, www.beckettfamilymusic.com.
Thanks for stopping by the website! Please keep in touch and I hope to see you down the road in 2017!
